Update the Tekla on-premises license server

We recommend that you always update your on-premises license server to the newest available version. Each license server version is compatible with several versions of Tekla Structures.

Newer versions of Tekla Structures do not always work at all with older on-premises license server versions.

You can use older versions of Tekla Structures with a newer version of the on-premises license server. You might need to install a newer service pack of the older Tekla Structures version.

  1. Save the model that you are working with and close Tekla Structures before the server update.
  2. On the Windows Start menu, go to Tekla Licensing > LMTOOLS.
  3. On the Stop/Start/Reread tab, click Stop Server to stop the Tekla on-premises license server and any other licensing services.

When you finish installing the Tekla on-premises license server, you can restart the other licensing services.

  4. Back up any files that you have modified in the C:\Tekla\License\Server folder.

You do not need to back up the tekla.lic or tekla.opt files because the installer will not change these files.

  5. Download the latest Tekla on-premises license server installation package.
    1. Go to Trimble Downloads.
    2. Select the version of Tekla Structures that you use, then click All downloads.
    3. Scroll down to the On-premises license tool section.
    4. Download the Tekla License Administration Tool.
  6. Double-click the installation file to run the installation.
  7. Follow the steps in the installation wizard to complete the installation.
For a standard setup, select Automatic and complete the installation.
  8. If you use the Tekla License Borrow Tool, install the new version of the tool on workstations that need it.
