Tekla License Server 2025 system recommendations
To use legacy on-premises licensing for Tekla Structures, you must install the licensing tools on your own hardware.
We recommend that you always upgrade your on-premises license server to the newest available version. Each license server version is compatible with several versions of Tekla Structures.
Operating system
The FlexNet licensing system for Tekla Structures runs on these operating systems.
- Windows 11
- Windows 10, supported until October 14th 2025, aligned with the Microsoft Windows 10 Home and Pro Lifecycle Policy.
- Windows Server 2022
- Windows Server 2019, supported until January 9, 2029, aligned with the Microsoft Windows Server 2019 Lifecycle Policy.
Both 32-bit and 64-bit operating systems are supported.
It is a best practice to install Tekla License Server on a computer that has a server operating system. If there is no local area network in your company, you can install the license server on each computer that Tekla Structures is running on, and activate one license on each computer.
Your Windows user name must not contain any special characters.
You must have administrator rights in Windows to install and manage the license server.
License server hardware
The server that is used as Tekla License Server does not have to have high performance. The reliability of the server and the network connection are more important than performance.
Users cannot run Tekla Structures without access to a subscription or license. The most reliable solution for serving multiple users is to use server hardware and a server operating system. Servers are designed to operate reliably for a longer time without the need to restart as often as regular workstations.
Virtualization platforms
Tekla License Server is compatible with these virtual machine platforms.
The listed versions are officially supported. Other versions might also be compatible.
- Citrix XenServer 8.2
- everRun 7.9.1
- Microsoft Windows 10 Hyper-V
- Microsoft Windows Server 2019 Hyper-V
- Microsoft Windows Server 2022 Hyper-V
- Nutanix AHV (Version 2020.09.16 Community Edition)
- Oracle Virtual Box 7.0.13
- Parallels Desktop 20 for macOS 13.2
- QEMU-KVM on CentOS 8
- Hypervisor: qemu-kvm-ev-3.2.0
- Hypervisor Services: libvirt-daemon-kvm-8.0.0
- Virtual Machine Manager: vmm v3.2.0
- VMware ESXi 7
- VMware Workstation 16.1.2
Linux or Unix based servers are not supported. Directly deploying the Tekla License Server in cloud environments is not supported.
Local area network
The license server and the client computers need to be in the same local area network. The clients need to be able to contact the license server. If there is no local area network in your company, we recommend that you install the license server on each computer that has Tekla Structures and activate one license on each computer.
The license server can be used in networks that use IPv4, IPv6, or both the IPv4 and IPv6 protocols.
Internet connection
Your license server contacts Trimble’s activation server when you activate deactivate, or repair licenses. Users who work outside of the office might also need to connect to the license server.
Direct communication from the license server computer to the internet must be allowed while your license server contacts Trimble’s activation server. For more information, see Allow Tekla on-premises license server to operate through Windows Firewall.
If direct communication from the server computer to the Internet is not allowed, contact your local Tekla Structures support for manual activation.
The computers where users use Tekla Structures connect directly to the license server for on-premises licenses. If users work outside the office, they must be able to connect to the license server remotely, such as through a VPN. Users can also borrow a license while they are connected to the license server in the office network. If you also have Tekla Structures subscriptions, users outside your office network can use the subscriptions without additional setup. Tekla Structures subscriptions are provisioned to the users directly from Trimble's cloud service.
Other infrastructure
Tekla Structures must be able to contact the license server to reserve a license when it starts up. Your firewall must allow the communication between the server computer and the computers where users use Tekla Structures.
You must allow the applications tekla.exe and lmgrd.exe to operate through the firewall.
The Tekla licensing service (lmgrd) uses TCP/IP port 27007 by default. This port should be dedicated for the Tekla licensing service only. If required, you can manually set a different TCP/IP port for the licensing service. See Modify the license file manually.
Do not change the MAC address of the network adapter on the computer that is running the license server. If you are using a virtual environment, ensure that you are using static MAC addressing instead of dynamic MAC addressing.
The computer running the license server must have a static IP address.
Backups
If the activated licenses are deleted or if the license server computer suffers a hardware failure, you need backups to recover your licenses.
Keep your on-premises licenses safe. Keep a copy of the license entitlement files that are sent to you by email. Back up your activated licenses in a separate backup location.
Deactivate your licenses before you make changes to the hardware or perform a major operating system upgrade on the license server computer. Keep copies of your license entitlement certificates in a safe place so that you can easily and quickly activate the deactivated licenses on a different system.
If activated licenses are lost and no backups are available, replacement licenses can be ordered according to the terms of the end-user license agreement.
