Renew a legacy on-premises license

Renew a legacy on-premises license

License renewal means changing the details on an existing on-premises license, such as updating the highest allowed software version or extending the validity period of a temporary license.

The activation server at Trimble keeps track of the activation status of your licenses. When you receive a renewed on-premises license, you must deactivate the current license, then activate the new version of the license. Two versions of the same license cannot be active at the same time.

You deactivate and activate licenses on the License server, which can also be the same computer on which Tekla Structures is installed. You must have an internet connection when you deactivate and activate licenses.

  1. Before you deactivate on-premises licenses, ensure that all borrowed licenses are returned.
  2. Rename your previous entitlement certificate file in the on-premises license server installation folder (by default C:\Tekla\License\Server) from EntitlementCertificate.html to EntitlementCertificate-OLD.html.
  3. Save the entitlement certificate file to the on-premises license server installation folder.

The person in your company who purchased the license, or someone named as the contact person, receives a new EntitlementCertificate.html entitlement certificate by e-mail as an attachment.

  4. On the Windows Start menu, go to Tekla Licensing > Tekla License Administration Tool.
  5. In the Activated Licenses area, click the Deactivate button next to each on-premises license that you want to deactivate.
    Note:

Do not use automatic server notification if you also use some other FlexNet license and license server administration tool, such as FlexNet Manager.

The license server contacts the activation server at Trimble. When deactivation is complete, the License Administration Tool shows a confirmation message.

  6. Click Open Certificate, then browse for the new EntitlementCertificate.html file.

The licenses that are available to activate are shown in the Choose licenses to activate area.

  7. For each license that you want to activate, do these steps:
    1. In the quantity selection for each license, select how many licenses to activate in one of the following ways:
      • Enter the number of licenses in the box.

      • Use the - and + buttons to change the number of licenses.

    2. Click the Activate button.

Your license server contacts the license activation server at Trimble.

The activated licenses are shown in the Activated Licenses area.

We recommend that you back up the trusted storage (..\ProgramData\FLEXnet\) in a safe place on a different computer than the license server. Backups can help you restore your licenses on the same server if active licenses are accidentally erased.
