Introducing Tekla Structural Designer
Tekla Structural Designer is an integrated model-based 3D tool for analysis and design (of both cast-in-place concrete and steel members) in multi-material structures. Design of other materials (such as timber, masonry, and precast concrete) is also possible provided you have access to a license of Tekla Tedds.
Philosophy
The aim is to allow you to rapidly build your model, apply loads, and design the model for an appropriate set of design forces.
On a day to day basis, you do not need to be involved with the underlying analysis models to achieve this. Instead, you can focus on the design results.
To make this possible, Tekla Structural Designer automatically creates and analyzes multiple solver models, each one being based on a different but widely accepted approach.
By designing for the forces from all the solver models, you can be confident that each scenario has been catered for.
Tekla Structural Designer way of working
The traditional modeling, analysis and design process can be summarized in the following phases:
-
Provide a way to input or describe the model
-
Analyze the model
-
Design the model
-
Produce calculations
-
Produce drawings
Tekla Structural Designer differs from the above by uniquely integrating analysis and design into a single, automated process. The workflow is streamlined into four main steps:
-
Input Geometry and Loads: Begin by defining the model's geometry and applying loads. Tekla Structural Designer supports BIM integration through automatic import of model data from Neutral Files and 3D DXF, or you can build the model directly. A flexible system of load cases allows for various load applications, including automatic wind, snow, and seismic load generators and automated load combination creation. Patterned beam loads can be generated automatically, while patterned slab loads for slab design are created manually.
-
Analyze and Design the Model: The software automatically performs the necessary analyses for member design, combining analysis and design into one seamless, automated process. Exceptions include slab design and members of other materials (like timber, masonry, and precast concrete), which are designed separately using Tekla Tedds. You can redesign the entire model or specific members using existing analysis results without re-running the analysis.
-
Produce Reports: Generate a wide range of calculations, which can be extensively customized to meet specific project requirements.
-
Produce Drawings: Create detail drawings, along with member schedules.
