All the text in drawings is replaced with crosses, what could cause this?

Check XS_TEXT_HEIGHT_FACTOR in options.ini.
XS_TEXT_HEIGHT_FACTOR is an old and hidden advanced option which was used to fine-tune Tekla Structures font heights when you are using the "Custom %" setting in font size setup. Some users or old models might still have this active in the options.ini file. The default value is 1.0. If this variable is set to 0, crosses are displayed instead of text. This factor should be greater than 0, and decimals can be used, so it can be set for example to 1.33 to set the font to appear 133 % of the size.
