For administrators: Troubleshooting Tekla on-demand licensing

Find solutions to common problems with using Tekla on-demand licensing.

Tekla.exe stops after a short period of time and licenses are not returned

Problem: The license server is unable to provide licenses.

The following message can be found in tekla_debug.log:

SERVER-OUT: Failed to send the message(79) <END>
Wrong hostid on SERVER line for license file:
...
SERVER line says COMPOSITE=<YOUR HOST ID>, hostid is COMPOSITE=
Invalid hostid on SERVER line

Reason: A network outage can cause this kind of issue with the license server.

Solution: Resolve the network connection outage issues, then restart the Tekla Structures on-demand license server if needed.

No licenses are available

Problem: No licenses are available when running Tekla Structures.

  1. The following message can be found in tekla-framework-yyyy-mm-dd.log:
warn [0004] # unable to borrow license for [On- DemandServerPermission-2019]
    - Server response error.
Unable to connect to the remote server

Reason: The offline permission license for the Tekla on-demand license server has expired and the server has stopped serving new Tekla Structures sessions until the permission license is renewed.

Solution: The Tekla on-demand license server might have been disconnected from the Cloud Licensing Service. Check your internet connection. The Tekla on-demand license server automatically renews its permission to run when the internet connection becomes available.

  2. The following message can be found in tekla-framework-yyyy-mm-dd.log:
info [0003] # unable to acquire license for [On-DemandServerPermission-2019]
    - A service system error was encountered: Requested feature was not found.

Reason: The Cloud Licensing Service ID might have been entered incorrectly.

Solution: Update the Cloud Licensing Service ID. Click the settings button in the Tekla On-Demand License Administration Tool, then update the Cloud Licensing Service ID to match the one that was provided.

  3. The following message can be found in tekla-framework-yyyy-mm-dd.log:
    Log Entry : ERROR : DD.MM.YYYY HH:mm:SS : Restarting the service was
unsuccessful: Cannot start service Tekla On-Demand Licensing Service on computer.

Reason: The firewall on the server might need to be configured.

Solution: Configure the firewall on the server to allow the Framework.dll, tekla.exe, and lmgrd.exe for the Tekla on-demand license server to operate through the firewall.

The tekla.lic file is not updated by the Tekla on-demand license administration tool

Problem: The tekla.lic file is not updated when activating or returning licenses.

The following message can be found in the OnDemandLicenseAdminTool.log:

ERROR : DD.MM.YYYY HH:mm:SS : License return was successful, However the
license file could not be updated to remove the activation id: XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-
XXXX-XX. Please activate the license and try to return the license again. Unable to
connect to the remote server.

Reason: The tekla.lic file cannot be updated. Either the file cannot be located, or it is already open and is locked.

Solution: Check that tekla.lic is in the same folder as the OnDemandLicenseAdminTool.exe application and is not open. If it is open, close the file and try to activate or return licenses.
