Fit part ends
Use fittings to adjust the end of a beam or a column, not the sides, by creating a straight fitting line between two points you pick. For example, you can cut a corner off a beam end to make it skew.
Fittings can also be used to extend or shorten the part end. However, do not extend or shorten the part considerably as this may lead to unexpected results. If you need to modify the part length, move the part handles or use direct modification instead.
When you use fittings to adjust the part end, Tekla Structures automatically selects the side of the part that is removed. The side to be removed depends on which side of the part midpoint the fitting is. The shorter side is cut off.
Note that fittings affect the gross length of a part. If you export information to NC files, fittings affect the length of the beam in the NC file. The overall length of the beam will be the fitted net length of the beam. This means that Tekla Structures always takes the fitting into account when calculating the beam length. For more information on working with the NC files, see NC files.
Create fittings
Before you start, ensure that you are working in a view with a suitable view plane. This makes it easier to pick the points for the fitting line.
-
In many cases you can create a view with a suitable view plane by using the command. The command creates views which have view planes along the main axes (x,y,z) of the selected part.
-
If you need the view plane on some other angle which is not along the part axis, you can first define the work plane and then use the command.
Should I use fittings or line cuts?
Both the fittings and line cuts can be used to adjust the part end.
With fittings
- you can adjust the part end, or to shorten or to extend the part moderately, or make the end of a part skew
- the gross length of the part is affected
- Tekla Structures automatically selects the side of the part that is removed (the shorter side is cut off)
- the part adjusting operation is faster and more lightweight in terms of Tekla Structures performance than creating line cuts
With line cuts
- you can cut the end of a beam or a column, or to cut a plate, a slab, an item, or a rebar set
- you cannot extend a part
- the gross length of the part is not affected
- you need to select the side of the part that you want to be removed
Add one fitting per one part end. However, you can use a fitting and a line cut to modify the same part end. If the end of the part needs to be inclined in two directions, first use the Fit part end command and then the Line cut command.
If you apply a second fitting to the same part end, Tekla Structures will ignore the first fitting, and use the second one.
If you want have more options on how to create and adjust fittings, use the Fit beams and columns or the Fit objects component.
