Migrate Tekla PowerFab to a new server

When migrating Tekla PowerFab to a new server, you need to first install Tekla PowerFab to the new server and then move the data from the old server to the new one.

1. Install Tekla PowerFab server

  1. Install Tekla PowerFab on a server.
  2. Install Tekla PowerFab Remote Server service.

    See Install Tekla PowerFab Remote Server in Set up Tekla PowerFab Remote Server for Tekla PowerFab Go.

  3. Document the directory locations, server IP address, and server name for the installation and update on client machines.
  4. You may need to create an inbound rule for the Windows firewall to allow the connection to the database through TCP port 3306.

2. Get the data from the old server

Note: Before you start migrating Tekla PowerFab to a new server, all users must be out of the system until the database has been restored on the new server.
  1. Open Tekla PowerFab on the old server as an administrator.
  2. To note the current location of the default directories, go to File > Default directories.
  3. Optional: Go to File > Administration.
  4. Optional: Click the Administration ribbon tab and select Check/Repair Tables: Medium.
  5. Optional: Go to File > Administration.
  6. Optional: Click the Administration ribbon tab and select Optimize Tables.
  7. In the File ribbon tab, select Backup Database.
  8. Save the file to an accessible location on the new server or portable media.
  9. Open the Services application and click Stop the service.
  10. To prevent users from doing work in the old database, stop and disable MySQL_TeklaPowerFab.
    Note: Instead of MySQL_TeklaPowerFab, the service name may be MySQL_Fabsuite.
    1. Open the Services application and click Stop the service.
    2. Right-click the service and select Properties.
    3. On the General tab, in Startup type, select Disabled.
    4. Click Apply.
    5. Click OK.

3. Restore the data on the new server

  1. Open Tekla PowerFab and log in as an administrator.
  2. Go to File > Restore Database.
  3. Browse to the location of the database backup from the old server and select the file.
  4. Follow the prompts to restore the database.

4. Migrate default directories to the new locations

If the default directories are local to the old server, they may need to be moved to the ones set up on the new server. If they are on a separate file server they may or may not need to be moved.

  1. Migrate the content of the Document Index, Drawing, and Custom Report directories to the new location.

    Migrating the content in other directories is optional.

  2. Locate the default directories.
  3. Copy the content of those directories to the new directories on the new server or location.

5. Update the connection and settings on the client machines

  1. Open Tekla PowerFab on the client machine.
  2. In the login dialog box, click Connection, and on the Database Connection tab, set the connection to the new IP address or server name.
  3. Click OK.
  4. If multiple connections are to be used, the local Windows administrator must do the following:
    1. In the login dialog box, click Connection, and on the Other tab, select Separate ODBC Data Sources by Connection Details.
    2. Click OK.
  5. Log in.

    If the database connection has changed, you get a message telling to update the ODBC connection to match the new one. This is for ensuring that the report viewer connection is also changed.

  6. Select Yes.
  7. Go to File > Default Directories and set the directories to the new location.

    Document Index, Drawing, and Custom Report directories are critical. The Update directory is important if you want to have future updates running through a system-generated prompt.

6. Update Tekla PowerFab Connection

It is important for those using Tekla PowerFab Go that the port forwarding on your router is updated if the server IP address is changed.

Note: If the server is moved to a different network that requires a change in the public IP address, contact support to have it updated for your site.

Due to the number of varieties of routers and software interfaces for setting port forwarding, we cannot provide specific instructions for this.
