Question
Why do I get a warning triangle reported for sway in the Project Workspace > Status > Design tree ?Image
Answer
In this article you will gain an understanding as to why you obtain a Project Workspace Status > Design > Sway warning in your model.If you hover over the Sway text it advises you to check the Sway review tables for further details.

The Tabular Data tables can be found to the far right of the Review ribbon.

- Select the Sway view type
- Choose the Materials to display
- Click the Alpha_crit Direction 1 or 2 column heading to order ascending or descending.

The Sway warning is provided because the lowest Alpha_crit value reported in the table is less than the allowable value for the analysis type performed under Design ribbon > Design Options - Analysis.

To resolve you could;
- Increase the lowest Alpha_crit value to above the lowest value for the chosen analysis type by increasing stiffness or
- Change the analysis type to a Second-order analysis method to include second order effects.
The lowest Alpha_crit value in the table must always be greater than the chosen analysis type for the Status tree > Design > Sway warning to not appear.
You can locate the problem element in the model by using the Home ribbon > Find command.

In the example above, the lowest Alpha_crit value was reported as 4.936. Changing to one of the Second-order analysis methods (where 4.936 is greater than the lower limit for the analysis method) removes the warning as the second-order effects are included in the analysis/design.
