Work package management
A work package represents the unit of work that is issued to the workshop for fabrication. You can use work packages to schedule and prioritize work.
A work package consists of a number of assemblies and their associated parts, and it is limited to one production control job. Not all instances of an assembly necessarily belong to the same work package.
Work packages are available in the Tekla PowerFab desktop app and Tekla PowerFab Go to view details, filter, and report.
New permission sets for work packages
There are new permission sets for both the Tekla PowerFab desktop app and Tekla PowerFab Go users.
For Tekla PowerFab, the permissions for work packages are set in the User Permissions dialog, on the Production Control tab.
For Tekla PowerFab Go, in the Remote Permissions dialog, there is a new tab for work package permissions.
For more information, see the following:
Create work packages
You can view existing work packages in the Production Control module when you open a job, and select Work Packages on the Production Control context menu .
In the Work Packages dialog that opens, you can create new work packages and edit and delete existing ones.
You can record data on releasing a work package for fabrication or remove packages from fabrication, and place work packages on hold. When a work package is on hold, the value in the Description column is highlighted in red.
You can also create work packages for multiple jobs at a time in
.When you create a new work package, you can define the following properties:
In the Work Package dialog, you can do the following:
- Create a new work package
- Release a work package into fabrication once it is ready to be worked on
- Place a work package on hold, either before or after being issued to fabrication
- Add assemblies and parts to the work package
- Add the work package to a purchase order
- View the status of the work package: Direct access to drawings, cut lists, material links, production, and shipping
For more information on the functionality, see the following:
Work package creation with Smart Create
The Smart Create tool speeds up the creation of work packages. It allows production managers to select three common assembly properties that can be combined to make a distinct list of work packages.
For more information, see Create work packages with Smart Create.
Add assemblies to a work package
After you have defined and saved the basic work package information on the Details tab, you can proceed to add assemblies to the work package. This provides you with greater control of how the work is issued.
In the Material Totals section, clicking the Add Assemblies button opens a dialog, in which you can select main marks of assemblies and add them to a work package.
On the Assemblies tab, you can view the existing assemblies and their quantities in the selected work package, delete them, and add new assemblies.
If a drawing associated with an assembly is on hold, this is hightlighted in red.
You can delete one assembly at a time.
View parts and assemblies in the work package
On the Assemblies tab, you can view the assemblies within the work package, and, correspondingly, the Parts tab lists all parts by assembly within the work package.
If a drawing associated with a part or assembly that is on hold, this is hightlighted in red.
The Parts Summary tab provides a summary of all assemblies and parts within a work package. Each part occurs only once in the summary.
Complete work packages automatically and manually
Work packages can be completed either manually or automatically.
Assemblies within the work package that have a route assigned to them are deemed complete once they have a production tracking record for the Dashboard Productivity Station station that is nominated for the assigned route. See Manage routes.
The following cases are exluded from this logic:
- Assemblies that have a route assigned but the Production Productivity station nominated for the assigned route is set to [None]
- Assemblies within the work package that do not have a route assigned
Once all the assemblies in the work package are considered complete, Work Package Statusis automatically updated to Completed: Yes.
Once assemblies and parts in the work package have passed through fabrication, production managers managers can also manually complete one or more work packages at a time. This may be used when production tracking is not being applied.
See also Complete work packages.
Warnings in work packages
Warning messages are shown if the work package properties are in conflict with other associated properties.
If there are any warnings, the Details tab displays a message asking you to view the Warnings tab.
The Warnings tab lists the actual warning messages.
When you release a work package to fabrication, a warning is issued if one or more of the assemblies does not have a production route assigned. You can then select a route before proceeding.
Add a work package to a subcontract purchase order
You can add the contents of a work package to a subcontract purchase order. This provides a simple way to create purchase orders for subcontract fabrication.
Add Work Package # to the project schedule
You can add Work Package # in Baseline Properties and then select it as a breakdown category to the project schedule.
For more information, see the following:
Filter and view work packages
When you open a production control job, you can filter and view work package information as follows:
- Navigation tree: Filter by work package
- Display area: Display the Work Package # column
- Summary grid: When a work package is selected in the navigation tree, show summary information for the selected work package
- Sequences & Tracking area
When you click Links to view material links, the Links dialog opens displaying the current status. It now contains the Open Work Package button that allows you to open the related work package.
See the following: .
In a production control job, you can also click the Production Control ribbon tab, and select Filter, which opens the Production Control Filters dialog that contains new work package filter types.
In addition to the Production Control job dialog, you can view and filter by work packages in the following dialogs:
See Manage cut lists.

Work packages in Trimble Connect
When you have an existing Trimble Connect project, you can color-code work packages on the Trimble Connect model using the Model Viewer Interface in Tekla PowerFab.
When adding assemblies to a work package, you can also use the Select in Model feature in the Tekla PowerFab context menu to visualize this in Trimble Connect.
See the following:
- Add assemblies to a work package using Trimble Connect
- Color-code estimating items in the IFC model
- Color-code production control items in the IFC model
You can also add a work package as a tree name to the Trimble Connect Organizer integration settings in :
See also Visualize jobs with Trimble Connect Organizer and Trimble Connect Content Browser.
Export work packages (PFXT, NC)
As a production manager, you can export both a single work package and a selection of work packages as a PFXT file and send this to a subcontractor. This means that you do not have to manually create each work package.
You can also export CNC files.
See Export work packages.
Import work package value from Tekla Structures model
When importing from a Tekla Structures model to Production Control, you can map the work package value of each assembly.
Example:
In Tekla Structures, column C1000 with a User Field 1 value WP1. This field will be mapped within Tekla PowerFab as Work Package #.
When importing to Tekla PowerFab, in the Import Field Map dialog, you can map the User Field to Work Package #.
Work package reports
You can create various reports for individual work packages and for multiple jobs and work packages in
.There are multiple reports available for work packages.
The Work Packages Explorer is a report with advanced functionality.
In the upper-left corner of the report viewer, you have bookmarks and filters. The bookmarks help you to navigate if you have a long report. You can use the filters to specify the items that you want to view in the report.
You can expand the rows on the report by clicking the plus (+) sign.
Work package information has also been added to the Production Control, Inventory, and Receiving reports.
See also Work package reports.
Work packages in Tekla PowerFab Go
Production managers and shop-floor workers are able to consume and manage work packages in Tekla PowerFab Go.
Using work packages in Tekla PowerFab Go, production managers can communicate the most up-to-date priority and information to the shop-floor workers. Work packages allow production managers to view and reprioritize work packages, reassign them to a new workshop, and put them on hold.
For shop-floor workers, work packages provide a single interface to work from and save them from having to consistently swap between different jobs. Shop-floor workers can view a list of the work packages they are currently working on, access the drawings and other key areas, and record progress on the cut lists and production tracking.
To prevent costly errors, administrators can control in Remote Permissions in the desktop application what actions individual users can perform on the new Work Packages interface in Tekla PowerFab Go.
See Manage Tekla PowerFab remote user permissions.
You can access the work packages from the Tekla PowerFab Go home page. In the Tekla PowerFab Go work package area, you can view work packages across all jobs.
Work packages are also available as a chart and filter for Job No. in the productivity dashboards in .
Open Tekla PowerFab Go work package management view in the desktop app
You can open the Tekla PowerFab Go work package management view directly from the Tekla PowerFab desktop app.
For more information, see View the production dashboard.
