CATALOG NAME: Thru Bolt
TYPE: DETAIL

This Custom Component is used to create Thru Bolts at the end of hollow section profiles. The resulting Thru Bolt assembly consists of 1 threaded rod, 2 nuts, and 2 washers. The assembly is considered a field applied bolt so it doesn't attach itself to the brace.

The size of the rod diameter is user driven. Based on the rod diameter you enter, the appropriate nut and washer profiles will be used. A nuts_and_washers_dat file is used to control the thicknesses of the nut and washer profiles. This file is organized into 5 columns; the first is the rod diameter column which again is the driving value. The second is the thickness of the nut, followed by the third column - the washer thickness. The washer and nut profiles are taken from the fourth and fifth columns.

To use the values defined in the nuts_and_washers_dat file, simply enter a 0" for the nut and washer thicknesses or if you want to use a different thickness, enter that value in the appropriate thickness field and that value will be used in lieu of the value in the nuts_and_washers.dat file.

How to use with System Components

It is recommended that you uses one of the system components to connect the brace to the supporting members. Inside the system component that you use, make sure to remove the bolt from the bolt assembly. This will remove the bolt but leave holes through the brace and gusset plate as shown here.

Then apply this custom component by selecting the brace and then picking a point along the end edge as shown here.

To align the Thru Bolt assembly with the holes in the brace and gusset, make sure that you enter the same value for the edge of the bolt that you used in the system component to locate the hole.

When asymmetrical profiles are used, you may have to change the Brace Rotation option on the Parameters tab.

Long edge vertical - Top (or Below) profile rotation uses the Top option as shown above.

Long edge horizontal - Front (or Back) profile rotation uses the Front option as shown below.
