Question:
Can I have some additional clarification on the difference between an overlay model and a reference model?

Answer:
Overlay models are lightweight models that are stored in the attached Trimble Connect project.  They are mainly for viewing purposes and are missing functionalities that are in real reference models. The main benefit is that they are lightweight and fast to handle and do not affect model performance and size as much as reference models.
