Create and modify attribute overrides for IFC export

Use the Attribute overrides control to customize certain IFC entity attributes, such as Name, Description, or Tag, by specifying export values that are tailored to meet project specifications, standards, and customer requirements. You can specify a Tekla property, a user-defined attribute, or a custom property as the export value.

The essential attributes, such as GlobalId, are hard-coded. The default value is <none>, indicating that the export will use the predefined values.

Create attribute overrides

  1. On the File menu, click Export > IFC.
  2. In the Export IFC dialog, select <new> from the Attribute overrides list and click the button.

  3. To add a new override, in the IFC attributes dialog, click Add attribute override on the right.
  4. In the displayed Add attribute override dialog, define the desired IFC export version and select one or more IFC entities from the IFC entities list by selecting the respective checkboxes.

The Attributes to override list is populated with attributes that can be overridden based on your IFC entity selection.

You can use a filter to further limit which objects are affected. For example, you can specify a filter to limit which IfcColumn objects are affected, like steel columns only.

    Do one of the following:

    • Select an existing filter from the list of filters.
    • To specify a new filter, click the Display filter button. In the Object group - IFC property export dialog, create a filter, set Filter type to IFC property export, and save it.
  5. In Attributes to override, select the checkboxes of the attributes that you want to override.

If you selected more than one IFC entity, the attribute list displays only those attributes that are common to all selected entities.

  6. Click Add when you are ready.

The attributes that you added for the selected entities are displayed at the bottom of the IFC attributes dialog.

  7. To customize the attribute definitions, select an attribute from the Attribute definitions list and click Edit attribute .
  8. In the Edit attribute dialog, select a Tekla property from the list, or enter a user-defined attribute or custom property.

To narrow down the list of available attributes, select an attribute group from the Group list. You can also search for attributes.

  9. Click Modify when ready.
  10. When you have defined the needed attribute override rules in the same way, give the attribute override rule set a name and click Save.

This will save a new <name>.attributeoverride file in the \IfcAttributeOverrides folder under the current model folder. The name of the attribute override rule set will be displayed in the Attribute overrides list in the Export IFC dialog.
