Retaining basement wall analysis & design (EN1997)

New retaining wall calculation introduced in the July 2023 Engineering Library update which is tailored for designing common substructures. The calculation can be used to design any basement wall, from a small residential basement to a multi-storey underground parking garage. This calculation considers common basement wall conditions that the standard Retaining wall analysis & design (EN1992/EN1996/EN1997) calculation does not. This includes axial and moment loading from the superstructure, lateral wind loading on the exposed wall, a single or double layer of stem reinforcement, and a pinned or fixed support condition at the base of the stem. This calculation also includes the features available in the standard Retaining wall analysis & design (EN1992/EN1996/EN1997) calculation, such as determining soil loads and design of a supporting strip footing.

  • The basement wall may be subject to vertical loads and moments from the structure above (dead, live, live roof, snow & wind). It may also be subject to surcharge loads (permanent and variable) applied to the top of the retained soil, lateral earth pressures and wind loads.

  • The basement wall may be subject to additional vertical loads and moments at an intermediate support should an intermediate slab be defined.

  • In accordance with EN1992, EN1997 and the national annex for the UK, Ireland, Singapore, Malaysia, Finland, Sweden, Norway or the recommended Eurocode values.
