For administrators: Best practices when using Tekla on-demand licensing

Follow these best practices to maximize the benefits of using Tekla on-demand licensing.

Restart the Tekla on-demand license server regularly

We recommend stopping and starting the Tekla on-demand license server regularly.

Note: Do not restart all of your Tekla on-demand license servers at the same time. To ensure that users can still get licenses, make sure that there is always at least one sever available.

Restarting the Tekla on-demand license server helps existing Tekla Structures applications that are using licenses from the Tekla on-demand license server change to using domestic or enterprise licenses on the Tekla license server if they are available.

To ensure that the change happens smoothly, the servers in the Tekla Structures server address field must be listed in the following order with a semicolon separating the license servers:

27007@DomesticTeklaLicenseServer;27007@EnterpriseTeklaLicenseServer; 27007@OnDemandTeklaLicenseServer

Or:

27007@EnterpriseTeklaLicenseServer;27007@OnDemandTeklaLicenseServer

Changes made to the license server list while Tekla Structures is running do not take effect until Tekla Structures is restarted.

Check whether it is safe to restart the Tekla on-demand license server

If you typically restart the Tekla on-demand license server more than once in every 72 hours, we recommend that you check whether it is safe to restart the server before you restart it.

To check whether it is safe to restart the Tekla on-demand license server, call the following URL: https://activate.tekla.com/gls/instances/.

If you receive the following message in the response, it is safe to restart the Tekla on-demand license server:

{
  "key" : "glsErr.restNoSuchApi",
  "message" : "No such REST API and METHOD combination supported: uri=//gls/instances/ with GET for user (unknown)",
  "arguments" : [ "uri=//gls/instances/", "GET", "(unknown)" ]
}

If you receive any other response, you should not restart Tekla on-demand license server.

Reduce unnecessary usage reporting of licenses

Unnecessary usage reporting can prevent licenses from being released to be used by others.

Tekla Structures users can reduce unnecessary usage reporting by following these guidelines:

  • Close Tekla Structures when you are not using it.

  • Do not leave the office with a laptop where Tekla Structures is open.
