TrimBIM

TrimBIM (.trb) file is a lightweight file format to store and exchange BIM data between different Trimble applications and other BIM tools.

In Tekla Structures, you can export the entire model or the selected model objects as a .trb file directly from Tekla Structures, and select which IFC property sets are included in the .trb file. The .trb file is always exported locally, and you can then upload the file to a selected Trimble Connect project, leaving the local file to the location where it was originally exported to.

You can use the same IFC property sets for the TrimBIM export as when exporting IFC, .trb, or .tekla file. Use the Property set definitions dialog to add and modify the property sets.

Export a TrimBIM file from Tekla Structures

  1. In a Tekla Structures model, select the model objects to export.

If you want to export all model objects, you do not need to select any objects.

  2. On the File menu, click Export > TrimBIM.

You can also start the export from the Quick Launch.

  3. Define the export settings.
    Setting Description
    File name

Enter the desired file name, without the file name extension.

    Folder

Browse for the folder location where you want to save the file.

By default, the .trb files are exported to the \TrimBIM\ folder under the current model folder.

    Location by
    • Model origin exports the model relative to 0,0,0.
    • Work plane exports the model Elevation relative to the current work plane coordinate system.
    • If you have defined a base point, you can use the Base point option.

Base point: <name of base point> exports the model relative to the base point using coordinate system values East coordinate, North coordinate, Elevation, Angle to North, Latitude and Longitude from the base point definition. The base point latitude and longitude values have a microsecond accuracy. Note that if the base point has not been defined, it is not displayed in the list.

    Selection

Select either All objects or Selected objects. If you selected Selected objects, you need to select the objects in the model.

    Object color

Select whether you want to export objects using object class colors or object group colors. If you select object group colors, the defined transparency settings are also exported.

    Property sets
    Project

Select the Trimble Connect project where you want to upload the .trb file.

    Trimble Connect folder

Select the folder path in the Trimble Connect project where you want to store the uploaded .trb file.

    Object types

Select the object types to export:

    Assemblies

If you select Assemblies, steel parts are exported as assemblies, otherwise steel parts are exported as single objects.

    Bolts

    Grids

    Reinforcing bars

    Surface treatment and surfaces

    Spaces

  4. To export the .trb file:
    • Click Export to export the .trb file to the local folder.

    • Click Export and upload to Trimble Connect to export the .trb file to the local folder and to upload it to the selected Trimble Connect project. The local file remains in the original export location.

Create and modify property sets for TrimBIM export

You can use the same IFC property sets for the TrimBIM export as when exporting IFC files. The Property set definitions dialog allows you to add and modify the property sets needed in the export. Once you have created the property set settings, you can use them with the export you prefer (IFC, .trb, or .tekla files).

You can create property sets from template attributes and user-defined attributes, define properties for the attributes, and bind the Tekla Structures property sets to IFC entities. You can save the property sets in property set configuration files. The list of configuration files includes predefined files located in your environment folders \common\collaboration\ifc and files stored in the \AdditionalPsets folder under the current model folder.

To create new property sets, see Create property sets for IFC export.

If the default IFC property sets in your environment work for you, you can use them and you do not need to create any custom property sets. However, if you are not satisfied with the existing property sets, you can modify the property set definitions or create a new property set configuration file.

To modify existing property sets, see Modify property sets for IFC export.
