Wind wizard (CTE DB SE-AE)
This configuration of the wind wizard is specifically for Spanish users working to Eurocodes.
To access it, in Model Settings the design code region has to be set to Europe (Eurocode) and the wind loading code has to be set to CTE DB SE-AE.
Once wall and roof panels are in place, you use this version of the wind wizard to define sufficient site information to calculate the peak wind velocity and velocity pressures for the required wind directions and heights around the building, (that is the Reference Heights (ze and zi) for each wall panel or roof panel).
The wind velocity calculations are automated, with the data source for the calculations being either input directly for the worst case, or input directly for each direction.
Unless explicitly stated all calculations in the wind wizard are in accordance with CTE DB SE-AE.
Limitations
- 3.3.1 Generalities
- Buildings at altitude <= 2000m
- Building with slenderness < 6 (dynamic affects not accounted for)
- 3.3.4 Wind coefficient of apartment buildings – not used
- 3.3.5 Wind coefficient of warehouses and open-plan constructions not used
Data Source page
When you select Wind Wizard from the Load ribbon, this is the first page that is displayed.
Property | Description |
---|---|
Data Source |
There are two
choices of wind data source:
|
Clicking Next takes you to the Basic data page below.
Basic data page
This page is used you to define the site details.
Property | Description |
---|---|
Air density | You need to enter air density at the site. |
Ground level in Model (Ignore Wind Below) | If for some reason, the level 0.0m in the Tekla Structural Designer model does not correspond to the ground level, for example a site datum may have been used rather than a building datum, then this field allows you to set the appropriate value so that the reference heights can be calculated correctly. |
Fundamental Basic Wind Velocity, vb,0 | The default of 29m/s is for the maximum region and can be reduced as required. |
Default Height for Internal Pressure, zi | All internal pressures are calculated using a single reference height, (zi), defaulting to the height of the structure. |
Use Building Height |
Leaving this option selected ensures that the height for internal pressure value is automatically updated if the geometry of wall panels or roof panels changes. |
Depending on whether you chose worst case data, or data for each direction on the Data Source page, clicking Next either takes you to the Roughness and Obstructions (Worst case) page or the Roughness and Obstructions (Data for each Direction) page.
Roughness and Obstructions (Worst case) page
If you selected the Worst Case Data Source you are required to select a single Terrain Category on this page.

Terrain Category |
Reference should be made to CTE DB SE-AE when determining an appropriate Terrain Category. The terrain category establishes the following values:
|
Clicking Next takes you to the Results page.
Roughness and Obstructions (Data for each Direction) page
If you selected the Data for each Direction Data Source, the next page of the wizard allows you to select the terrain category in each wind direction.
Property | Description |
---|---|
Direction |
Initially there are 4 orthogonal wind directions relative to the Tekla Structural Designer axes, (not geographical North), but you are able to update these using the Add Dir. and Del Dir. buttons and / or changing the direction value as required. (Note: Minimum 1° difference between directions). At least one direction must be defined. Each row of the grid operates in a similar manner to the relevant fields of the Roughness and Obstructions (Worst case) page. |
Clicking Next takes you to the Results page.
Results page
The final page of the wizard is a summary of the results - peak velocity pressure ranges.
Initially there are 4 orthogonal wind directions relative to the Tekla Structural Designer axes, (not geographical North), but except for the Data for Each Direction method, you are able to update this using the Dir. buttons and / or changing the direction value as required. (Note : Minimum 1° difference between directions). At least one direction must be defined.
You are able to use the <<Details>> button to view additional information, including the values of intermediate factors used in the calculations.
When you click Finish, the wizard generates the wind zones for the entire building for each of the specified wind directions.
Before moving on you should take a moment to inspect the Wind Model status on the Project Workspace> Status tab, in order to check that no issues have been encountered.
