Mult, nest, or cut materials with SICAM

You can use SICAM to mult and nest materials outside Tekla PowerFab. First, you need to set up Tekla PowerFab and SICAM to work together. Then, you can send the parts to be cut as work orders from Tekla PowerFab to SICAM. When you have multed and nested the parts, you can check in the multing and nesting results back to Tekla PowerFab.

For information about relevant permissions, see Define permissions for external multing and nesting integrations.

Set up Tekla PowerFab to work with SICAM

  1. Go to Maintenance > Integration Settings > Controlled Automation - SICAM.

The Controlled Automation - SICAM Integration Settings dialog box opens.

  2. Select the desired SICAM interface and folder.
  3. Click Save.

Note that you need to set up SICAM to work with Tekla PowerFab as well. To do so, go to Tekla PowerFab settings in Sicam settings.

Send a work order to SICAM

A work order is a nesting or multing request. A work order contains the CNC files to be cut, and the available and orderable inventory on which you can nest materials.

  1. Open a combining, estimating, or production control job, a requisition, or a purchase order.
  2. Click the contextual ribbon tab.

For example, if you are working on a combining job, click the Combining ribbon tab.

  3. On the menu, select Combine.
  4. In the Select Combining Run dialog box, click a desired combining option to select it.
    The options are:
    • Mult: combines linear items, like beams and angles.
    • Nest: combines items that have area, like plates or gratings.
    • Mult & Nest: combines all items.
  5. At the lower left corner of the Combining Run Filters dialog box, click Optimizations.
  6. Depending on which items will be combined, do one or both of the following:
    • On the Mult Settings - Linear Material tab, set Multing Software to Sicam.
    • On the Plate Nesting Settings tab, set Plate Nesting Software to Sicam.

  7. Click Save.
  8. To combine the materials, click the button at the bottom of the Combining Run Filters dialog box, or press F4.

In the Combining Run Results dialog box, all parts show as not combined.

  9. Click Save Combining Run.
  10. Click the Combining Run ribbon tab.
  11. On the menu, go to Export Parts for Nesting, and select one of the following:
To export the multing and nesting information... Do this
To the SICAM folder as an XML file
    1. Select Export File to Sicam.
    2. In the Export Parts for Combining dialog box, adjust the settings according to your needs:
      • To include existing inventory materials in the export, select the Include available inventory check box.
      • To include inventory materials that are on order in the export, select the Include orderable inventory.
      • In the CNC Files list, select how you want to include CNC files in the export.
    3. Click Export Parts.
    4. In the Save As dialog box, browse to and select the folder where you want to save the XML file.
    5. Click Save.

The XML file is exported to the selected folder. You can view the progress of the export in the Status dialog box. When the export has been finished, you can click OK.

When the export is finished, you can import the XML file to SICAM manually.

    Directly to SICAM
    1. Select Export Direct to Sicam.

The multing and nesting information opens directly in SICAM.

Now, you can mult and nest the materials in SICAM.

  12. Save the mults and nests, and check in the multed and nested materials to Tekla PowerFab.

For detailed instructions, see the SICAM documentation.

When the nests and mults are checked into Tekla PowerFab:
  • If material needs to be ordered, a requisition is created in Tekla PowerFab. The automatic requisition number consists of the date and time when the update occurred.
  • If the necessary material is in the inventory, Tekla PowerFab links it to the job. Plate and remnant images become available by double-clicking a plate.
