Question

I have a Validation > Analysis > Model > “Panel is not surrounded by load carrying members” error. Why do I get this and how do I resolve it?

Answer

The issue here is that the two types of panels are not correctly spanning onto the supporting members. As a result, load distribution cannot be carried out for the one way spanning panels. This issue can affect wind walls, roof panels and one way spanning slabs of all types.

The issues usually stems from 3 problems which are as follows:

  1. Panel is not correctly spanning onto/does not meet the supporting members
  2. Supporting members cannot take any of the panel load
  3. Panel span direction may be incorrect

To resolve this issue, either the geometry of the panel will need to be edited in a way that it meets the insertion of the surrounding members, this includes either editing the insertion of the panel or the span direction. This may also require different member types to support the panel in question.

An explanation of how these issues can be resolved are as shown.

Issue 1 - Floor slab example

For this issue, the slab edge will need to be edited so that it meets the beam insertion line. In the screenshot above, the beam geometry has been turned off so the insertion line can be seen clearly.

Issue 2 - Roof panel example 1

For the next two issues, the example can be seen when looking at this roof. This roof is decomposing the loads to the eaves and apex beams. Therefore load carrying members must surround the roof panel. As there is a brace at the eaves level, decomposition cannot take place here. To correct this issue, the brace at eaves level can be replaced by a beam.

Issue 3 - Roof panel example 2

Using the same example above, if the load is intended to be decomposed to the inclined rafters, the roof span direction can be changed.
