Why is the grid not visible in the 3D view?

Question:
I've created a grid and moved it by 2000 mm in the Z direction. Now I can see the grid in the correct position in an elevation view, but it disappeared from the 3D view. I have extended the view depth of the 3D view but the grid is still invisible. Why doesn't it show?
Answer:
A grid represents a three-dimensional complex of horizontal and vertical planes as illustrated in the image below:

The projection of the grid planes is scribed on the view plane using dash-and-dot lines. In the picture below, the white plane represents the view plane, and you can see that although it's not on a Z-coordinate grid plane, the grid is drawn there on the view plane:

View depth has no effect on grid visibility - the grid is only shown on the view if any of the grids' planes intersect the view plane. So if your view plane is at Z = 0 and your grid's lowest XY plane is at Z = +2000 and the extensions of the grid are less than 2000 mm, then the grid planes don't reach the view plane, and as a result the grid cannot be seen in the 3D view:

To fix the situation, you need to move the view plane inside the grid complex. You can do this simply by selecting the view by clicking the background, and right-click to open the context menu and select Move > Linear. When you lift the view by e.g. 1500 mm, it will then reach the grid extensions, and the grid lines become visible again.

Other reasons why a grid could be missing from a 3D view:
- Grid visibility: The grid might be turned off in the view. You can check this by double-clicking the view background and selecting "Display...". Make sure the grid visibility is switched on.
- Work area limitation: If the work area is restricted far from the grid location, the grid might not be visible within the current view. You can fix this by right-clicking the view background and selecting "Fit work area to entire model"
- Grid does not exist: It is possible the grid is deleted or hasn't been created yet.
