Why does the calculation give design data for Granular soils but not for Cohesive soils?
Background
For the following calculations for Granular soil the engineer can select from several options to specify the soil material, compaction and angularity etc which automatically set the soil design values (e.g. as shown below for the Pad footing analysis and design (BS8110) calculation). Why are there no similar options for Cohesive soil?- Pad footing analysis and design (BS8110)
- Retaining wall analysis and design (BS8002)
- Gabion retaining wall analysis and design (BS8002)
Answer
BS8002 includes a specific method for determining the properties of granular soils given a simple set of input values relating to the soil grading. This method has been built into these Tedds calculations. There is no equivalent method provided in BS8002 for cohesive soils. Hence the engineer must specify them directly. For cohesive soil you can specify values for moist & saturated density, design shear strength and angle of wall friction based on your observations and knowledge of the soils on site and any recommendations contained in the soils investigation report.
Note: If you initially select a granular soil but then change to cohesive, the granular properties can be retained. All values should be reviewed and confirmed before proceeding with the design
