Question

I am getting the following Validation warning in my model "Validation Warning: Area Item WI X is an Inset Storey - these are currently beyond the scope of EN 1991-1-4: 2005". How do I deal with it?

Answer

Eurocodes does not currently have a requirement for inset stories.

In the British Standard code there is specific guidance on how to deal with inset stories (BS 6399-2: 1997 Cl 2.4.4.2). Currently to the Eurocode no guidance exists.

The Tekla Structural Designer validation process checks the geometry of the building and identifies if inset stories exist. It warns you to this, irresective of the head code specified. We flag if an inset storey occurs in the software whichever code is used.

We do not deal with inset stories in the software to either code of practice.

What you do with the warning is down to you as the Engineer.

You can consider things as:

  • Ignoring the warning as not covered in Eurocodes
  • Take the advice given in British Standards and amend the applied loading by creating an additional manual wind load case and combining with the automatically generated one
  • Manually edit the wind zones to alter the applied loading as you deem adequate
