Question:
How do I model rebar into an elliptical member?

Answer:
The following example will take you through the process of modelling the rebar in an elliptical/curved member step-by-step. We will start by placing and moving the longitudinal rebar before progressing onto modelling the side bars. We will also take a look at creating crossing rebars and modifying the end details.

Example

Model longitudinal rebar

Let's add the longitudinal rebar.

  1. From Concrete tab, select Rebar > Bar group

The Rebar group properties pane opens.

  1. Set the properties as shown:
    • Rebar group type: Tapered curved
    • Size: 20
    • Creation method: Equal distribution by target spacing value
    • Target spacing value: 100.00mm
  2. Pick the part to reinforce
  3. Pick the shape of the bar, select top point followed by bottom point. Click middle mouse button
  4. Repeat for second and third points

The rebar group is added.

  1. Select the rebar group
  2. From the Rebar group properties pane, set On plane value to -40.00
  3. Click Modify

The rebar group repositions.

  1. Continue to add the longitudinal rebar

Move rebar

Let's move the rebar to fill in the gaps. The Alt key will allow us to select just the handles for the group.

  1. Select the first rebar group
  2. Holding Alt, window select the rebar group handles
  3. Right-click and select Move
  4. Pick the origin for moving
  5. Pick the destination point

The rebar repositions.

  1. Continue to move rebar

Model side bars

Let's add the side bars.

  1. From Concrete tab, select Rebar > Bar group
  2. Set the properties as shown:
    • Rebar group type: Normal
    • On plane: 25.00
    • From plane: 42.00
    • Start: 0.00mm
    • End: 0.00mm
    • Creation method: By exact spacing with flexible last space
    • Target spacing value: 100.00mm
    • Exclude: None (all reinforcing bars included)
  1. Pick the part to reinforce

To pick the points that define the elliptical shape, switch on the following four Snap... buttons. Switch off the other Snap... buttons. Now we can snap to the points we need to pick.

  1. Pick the shape of the bar
  2. Click middle mouse button
  3. Pick two points to indicate the range to reinforce

The rebar group is added.

Create crossing rebars

  1. From Concrete tab, select Rebar set > Create crossing rebars
  2. Select an edge of a concrete part or pour object
  3. Click middle mouse button
  4. Switch on Direct modification button
  5. Expand toolbar, select Add end detail modifier
