Masonry wall panel design (BS5628): Eurocode vs British Standard gives very different results
If you compare the design of reinforced masonry walls to British Standards (BS) and Eurocodes (EC) the EC design appears to allow a much higher moment of resistance. For example, in the attached files the Utilization for the EC version (for broadly very similar input) is 1.27 but for the BS version is 5.2 - i.e. the EC gives a panel capacity about 4 times as high.
Solution
The difference is due to the limit imposed in the BS calculation of using only 1.5* the un-reinforced moment of resistance from BS5628-2:2005 Annex A cl. A.3, final paragraph as no serviceability or deflection check is carried out. There is no requirement by EC6 to limit the reinforced capacity to 1.5* the un-reinforced capacity. As mentioned above the 1.5 limit in the BS is there if no serviceability/deflection check is carried out (which the Tedds calculation doesn't undertake and so applies the 1.5 limit). For the EC calculation a serviceability slenderness check is carried out in accordance with Annex F therefore if the panel passes this slenderness check the full moment capacity of the reinforced section can be taken.
Note: For the Eurocode example attached the Annex F check fails. Therefore in this case it would be wrong then to compare the moment of resistance of the EC calculation and the BS calculation because the EC calc has failed the serviceability check but for the BS this is done by reducing the allowable moment capacity.
