The equation used to calculate the Bending Moment Coefficient is actually a modification of the elastic theory using a yield analysis approach. This is because, once openings in panels have been added, the Tables in the code (for bending moment coefficients) do not tend to cover the dimensions of the sub-panels, or cater for the line load applied to the free edge by the opening.  The equations used by the calculation modify the Bending Moment Coefficient rather than the applied load; the Design Moment is then calculated by multiplying the load by the modified Bending Moment Coefficient.
