I have a Validation > Model > General> “Invalid member group” warning. Why do I get this and how do I resolve it?
Answer
An Invalid member group validation warning occurs when members exist in the same group but they no longer meet the group rules.
The tooltip indicates this to you when you hover over Invalid member group or any problem element listed within the branch.
Elements can be grouped for design. This is controlled via the Design ribbon tab > Design Options > Design groups page.
By default concrete beams and columns are grouped for design. For further details on design groups please refer to this page in the Tekla Structural Designer product guides.
You can double click the Invalid member group or individual element to locate it in the active scene view. If the item is not in the active scene view then the Structural 3D view is opened and set active. The selected element properties are also displayed in the Properties window for review and editing. You can determine the Group the element is in via the Properties window.
In the screenshot below the design group is CRB4 and the detailing sub group is D1.
We can confirm this by reviewing the design group CRB4 by switching to the Project Workspace > Groups window. The element is listed in the group.
We could review the properties of elements in the group to determine the reason for the invalid group message. It is likely to be associated with edits made during an exported Building information modelling (BIM) identified after re-import (since edits made within Tekla Structural Designer force a regrouping), or by adjusting length variations via the Home ribbon tab > Model Settings > Grouping page.
To resolve the warning, an investigation is not necessary, since the issue is quickly resolved by right clicking the problem item in the Status window and via the context menu choosing the option Regroup Member(s). When this command is run the item is automatically placed in a valid existing design and detailing groups or new groups are created as necessary.
Once the Regroup Member(s) command has been run the validation warning is no longer displayed.
