Question

I have a Validation > Model > General > Beams > “Invalid double angle dimension between connectors” error. Why do I get this and how do I resolve it?

Answer

Hover over the error and a tooltip is displayed “Double angle dimension between connectors is zero or greater than the length of span.”

Validation Error

When modeling a double angle, the Compression property 'a' (distance between connectors), has to be manually set (either in the Compression section of the Properties window or on the Compression tab of the Properties dialog). Please refer to AISC 360 section E6 for further information. If the designer does not manually set this in the member Properties, the default value of 0” is identified as impractical during model Validation and an error message is generated.

Double clicking the branch “Invalid double angle dimension between connectors” identifies all the issues of this type in the model. If the members exist in the active view they will be highlighted. If they do not exist in the active view then Tekla Structural Designer will automatically switch to the 3D Structure view regime and highlight the members. You can then define this in the Compression section of the Properties window for all highlighted members.

If you need to define this property separately for each double angle, click the plus symbol next to the “Invalid double angle dimension between connectors” error and the branch will expand to list individual items.

From here you can double click a specific member to highlight it in the active view and then define the distance between connectors in the Compression section of the Properties window. You will then need to repeat this process for each member in the list.
