Question

How do I apply a line load to a wall panel when the load is not applied at the floor level. The Line load command is greyed out in the 3D Structure view?

Answer

A wall panel is a panel item and therefore to apply load to it, you need to use the Load ribbon > Panel Loads group.

Panel loads will be greyed out unless you are in a 2D view i.e. a Plan, Frame or Sloped view.

To apply say a Load ribbon tab > Panel Loads group > Line Load to a wall item you need to open a Frame view as the screenshot below.

  1. Set the Load case you wish to apply the load in.
  2. Invoke the command from the Panel loads group - in this case the Line load command
  3. Set the properties in the Properties window
  4. Pick a reference node that the line load to be referenced from.

Move the cursor to the approximate location of the start of the line load.

Press F2 to allow you to edit the values displayed in the Offset X and Offset Y input boxes.

You can use the Tab key to toggle between the input boxes.

Press Enter to confirm the values.

If you have made a mistake you can right click to go back one step in the process.

Move the cursor to the approximate location of the end of the line load.

You can use the Tab key to toggle between the Offset X and Offset Y input boxes.

Input the values as required to specify the end position of the line load and press Enter to confirm the values.

The line load is then applied and visible within the wall using the Select Entity at the cursor position.
