Background

The Tekla Structural Design programs (Tekla Tedds, Tekla Structural Designer, Tekla Portal Frame, and Tekla Connection Designer) support several different licensing options. The installation manager will prompt you to select the license method during the installation of the software. However, there are some instances where you may need to change the license method after installation, such as:

  • Accidentally selecting the wrong method during installation
  • Switching from Sentinel RMS perpetual licensing to Tekla Online licensing
  • Updating for a combination of both Server and Tekla Online licensing

To change the license method, follow the instructions below.

Resolution

*Note that the license method for your company's license(s) is listed in the entitlement email(s) sent to the main contacts of the account. If you are still unsure which license method you require, please refer to the descriptions of the licensing options below and reach out to your internal IT if further confirmation is needed.

Licensing Options

The licensing options available for selection are:

  • Tekla Online
Select this if you have purchased a Subscription, are starting a Trial or Evaluation, or if you are a Student or Developer Partner
  • Automatic (try ‘Tekla Online’ then ‘Sentinel RMS - Server’)
Select this option if you have both subscription licenses (Tekla Online) and on-premises licenses (Sentinel RMS - Server). This option will first look for an available Tekla Online license, then an available Sentinel RMS server license if no Tekla Online licenses are available.
  • Sentinel RMS - Server
Select this option if you only have on-premises licenses on your company's own Sentinel RMS license server.
If this option is selected you will also need to input the Server Name and/or IP address where the license(s) are hosted. The Server Name and the Server Port are shown as (Default) in the Products item and refer to the name and port set in the License Server item in the left-hand pane.
  • Sentinel RMS - Local Computer
Select this option if you have an on-premises license that is only used on this computer.
  • Sentinel RMS - Local USB Key
Select this option if you have a legacy USB License Key.
  • Ask each time
Select this option if you wish to be prompted to select the license method each time the product is opened.

Registry Key Values

The license method settings can also be managed through the Registry. The Registry Key that controls the licensing method is located under:

Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\WOW6432Node\Tekla\Structural\Licensing\Products.

Each product folder at this location contains the Key LicenseMethod.

The values for the different license methods are:
