Handling Gratings
Gratings in Tekla Structures are modeled as plates/contour plates. We can distinguish them from standard plates by using a special profile, let’s say profile GRTG or you can make your own custom profile definition as indicated in the following linked article under section Add profile definitions to the profitab.inp file.
Briefly for modeling the gratings:
- Use profile GRTG or a custom one.
- Give them a unique name say GRATING.
- Choose the material for the grating, you can use “Grating” as it has an average density of almost 40kg/m2, it would be useful for reporting gratings weights.
- You can also give them a unique class/prefix

In this article we will demonstrate an example for creating a GA grating plan.
We will benefit from the detailed object level settings to create a specific settings for the grating GA drawing. In this example, we will give a special hatch or filling to the grating and make all the other parts drawn as hidden lines plus we will show the part mark in the middle of the grating panel:
- Create a drawing filter for the grating:

- Create Part properties for the grating:

- Create part properties for the other parts to make them drawn in hidden lines:

- Fill in the object level settings for your GA drawing:

- More details on object level settings on the following link: Detailed object level settings.
- You can use the below leader line type so the part mark can come in the middle of the grating panel:

- Apply those settings then create your GA Grating plan drawing or modify the current one.
- More details on creating GA drawings on the link: Create general arrangement drawings.
End results will be similar to the below drawing:
Some useful tools for modeling the gratings:
- Safegrid: Custom component for creating a basic grating panel, it will create a component to represent a grating panel with bearing/cross bars, but using this component extensively in your model can make it slower. Found in this link.
- Platform grating tools: Creates grating plates and toe plates for selected platform, Found in this link for versions until 2017. The macro is built-in on versions 2017i and newer as indicated in the article Platform Grating.
- Grating_Load_Bar_Direction: A component that provide a very simple way to add symbol grating load bar direction, it will add a surface cut on the top of the grating denoting the direction of the bearing bars plus it will provide a unique number to your grating. Found in this link.
