Question

I have an overhang on my roof where I would like to apply a patch load that is different to the rest of the roof.

Is there a way to apply a patch load without modelling a separate roof panel, which would affect my roof wind load zones?

Answer

In the screenshot below, an Area load has been applied over the entire roof panel.

To apply a load to part of a roof panel you need to use the Patch load command.

If you review the Load ribbon > Panel Loads group, you will only see a few of the panel commands are available to you. This is because the other panel load types need to be applied in a plan or slope view.

  1. Determine the Slope the roof panel is assigned to, by selecting the panel
  2. Review the Properties window > Plane option, to determine the slope you need to open
  3. You can then open the Slopes view by double clicking the reference in the Project Workspace > Structure pane > Slopes branch

Ensure you select the load case you wish to apply the load in via the load case drop list in the status bar

The patch load command will then be available for you to use.
  1. Run the Load ribbon > Panel Loads group > Patch Load command
  2. Set the information in the Properties window
  3. Click a reference point to measure the patch from i.e A/1
  4. Define the one end of a rectangle (if you want to define the same point as the reference poine above, press F2 and enter 0, tab , 0, Enter)
  5. Define the opposite edge of the rectangle.
